Mustang, in its birth, was the first "personal coupe," a car built specifically to please the driver beyond ways a dedicated sportscar or sedan can. It offered style and performance without the discomfort and impracticalities of a sportscar, a well groomed GT. Once again, Ford is thinking in the short term, I believe that sedan/wagon versions will do fairly well, but in the future when sports coupes become demanded again the Mustang image will be diluted. When Honda figured a roadster wouldn't sell well in the market, they didn't add two doors and seats and made an S____ sedan, they reserved the name until they could make it as they should.
There's all sorts of things wrong making an Mustang sedan/stationwagon, use the engineering and name it something else: names don't sell cars (so long as you don't name it something completely dumb), cars sell cars.

There's nothing "pure" about the Mustang brand or tradition anymore. It's already difficult to tell the difference between a 6 cylinder and an 8 cylinder model. So why not build a sedan version, a wagon version, an SUV version, and a compact hatch version for that matter? Who cares?

The only problem is this is not what Ford needs to do to survive. They need exciting new models, not variations on old models.
the 6 and 8 cylinder cars often ARE hard to tell apart. that is part of their appeal specifically to the 6 cylinder buyers...the 6 cylinder buyers are what keep the mustang selling at such a high level.
i don't see a wagon version coming out...there are a hell of a lot of mustang guys out there that would protest...remember the mustang III which was later renamed the probe. that was caused by the uproar of the mustang faithful crowd.
stop hating on the mustangs...enjoy them for what they are...a fun attainable sporty car with some wheel spinning torque...nothing wrong with that.

I think why most people hate the Mustang is because of the people that are attracted to it. It's not that the Mustang is so insanely horrible, but that it is FAR FAR from a perfect car and yet there are too many owners that adamantly believe that it is(and feel they must share that fact with people that chose the "lesser" vehicles). Kind of like what happens whenever the SRT-4 is mentioned...

I actually really liked it back in the late 80s when the GT was essentially just a body package. You could get all the go fast parts in the base body. In my view the LX 5.0 was the sleeper and the one to have.

i had a foxbody mustang and enjoyed it...actually reliable for me as well. for a while i had the s2000 and mustang at the same time. the mustang really became unenjoyable to drive because of its horrible handling and steering...granted that was all stock. i found myself driving the mustang less and less, saving it for a 'sunny day' car. when it came down to it though i would have rather drove the s2000 on those sunny days even though the mustang was significantly faster...damn s2000 spoiled me

i agree with your point about the stereotypical mustangers...i grew up with that crowd...the mustang, camaro and GN were the cars to have...then there was always that rich kid that had the supra or corvette. hehe. the point is that there are a lot of jerk mustang owners but there are a lot of jerks owning every kind of car. however we can all agree that all srt4 owners are jerks right?
