If I had some dough and wanted to start a collection of recent automobile history from the past 1/4 century I would look for fine examples of the following:
1. Regal Grand Nationals (still relatively affordable...faster than the Corvette in its day.)
2. Irocs/TAs from the 80s, particularly ones with the 350 TPI, and/or the ultra rare 1LE pkg
3. mid to late 80s RX-7s (particularly the turbo...a vastly underrated car/performer)
4. Shelby Omni GLHS (a true pocket rocket with a Shelby name to boot.)
5. 1st Gen Eclipses/Talons (great performance and styling...I believe these started the tuner craze due to their modability.)
I think those would have a way better shot at being collectible than that list there.

Hmmm. Not totally sure on this list, and it could've been a lot longer. Why not include the RX-7, or 300ZX? I think Grand Nationals were left off because they're so easy to fake, and real ones in top shape are still into the $20ks on price. I did notice the MR2 was absent. I would personally have included old classics like the E30 M3, the E24 M6, E28 M5, 80's Merc SL, early 90s Merc E500, etc. But all of these, like the GN, can get into the $20ks for one in perfect rockable condition.

Meh, the list got better towards the end. SVO, miata, crx, all good picks, second gen firebird? In CA they're worthless if you get one after 74, now the first gen on the other hand...
Agreed that the mr2 should be there, and since their pricing structure seems to be around 10,000:
corrado slc
celica all trac (good luck finding one though)
mr2
rx7 turbo II, FD
240sx (im biased i know)
E30 Me (but not exactly a bargain purchase though)
Z32 300zx
Dodge Stealth/3000GT
Datsun 510
hmm, thass all that comes to mind atm.

Clean examples of all the famous japanese sportscars from the late 80's through the 90's fetch a lot of money now and will continue to do so.
A clean 300zx turbo has risen to 10k minimum just as MR2's have. Turbo FC's I'm not were ever popular enough even though I adore the cars, FD's are pieces of junk and are beloved, supras and NSX's go without saying. Even VR4's of late will probably go for decent money.
