Audi says they are also developing direct injection gas engines, starting with the 3.1 L in the new A6. Mercedes is doing similar development, too.

BMW doesn't tune for peak power...they tune for area-under-the-curve. So there is thrust at all RPMs. So while the peak might not be as high in this example, the fact that the car was pulling earlier in each gear made up for it.

Not to mention the uprated Z4 -- the current one's as fast as the S2000 and the old M Roadster in a straight line, and the new one's going to have another 33 horses...
