What I'm guessing is that they are following GM's approach to ditch the Grand AM to create a whole "new" car.

When your Taurus or Grand Am isn't selling because of people saying "oh this car is like this" then you create a new one to end stereotyping... can't blame them for trying.

Well they originally planned on making the Five Hundred the Taurus replacement, but I guess they didn't have enough faith in the car, or maybe it changed too much from concept to final product...

GM did this with the mid-size Blazer/Jimmy when going to the Trailblazer and Envoy, and most recently with the S10/Sonoma-to-Colorado/Canyon changeover.

In fact, I believe you can even still buy a Cavalier during the first year of the Cobalt. You can tell GM and Ford are scared sh!tless of their own new cars. Just kill the old cars and get on with it. Whatever owner base they think they'll piss off needs to just deal with change and deal with new technology.

Oh darn, no more Cavaliers and Tauruses. Whatever will I do? Oh wait, I'll probably live a happier life.

A lot of those Tauruses went to public sector, such as government officials, and rental sector. I have one myself. I gotta say, it's one crappy car, but it's free for usage.

Think back to 86 when the Tarus changed the industry. That's the difference between the ballsy approach and the pussy approach.

My roomie/renter bought a '04 Taurus about a year ago brand new for like $12k from the showroom floor only b/c of the great deal he got on in. Fastforward 1 year to now and he absolutely hates it. Poor gas mileage for what it is and just about the boringest car imaginable. He's looking to trade it in for a 3-Series

BMW salesman: "You paid $12,000 for it a year ago, and you'd like to trade it in on a 3-series? No problem, we'll give you $1200 for it."
