Default Oil change

I have a '91 CBR600 F2 that I've had since new. It has about 10,000 KM (6000 mi.)
I really only ride it when I "want to go for a spin". I should really sell it but can't bring myself to let it go.

I change the oil and filter every spring before my first ride. Since I put so few KM's on it, is this really necessary? I did read the manual but I don't think they took into account my unusual circumstances.

BTW, since I got the S, I haven't ridden my bike once.

Hey, good buddy, I used to be an "occasional" rider, too. I've always had cars that were "toys" so the bike only got used when I felt like going out and "terrorizing" the streets. I would change the oil once a year at the beginning of the riding season, after a first brief ride just to get the oil circulated. I have a friend who's got car "toys" AND bike "toys". He's a bit more anal than most and he dumps his oil just before storage in the winter - leaves the crank empty. If you don't ride it much, I think once at the beginning of the riding season is plenty good. I'm not so sure about leaving the oil in there just because you don't ride it at all. For the few bucks in oil, why not just change it. If you are not too fussy, you could just leave the filter as I know on some bikes (maybe yours), the filter is a bit of a bear to get at. No harm in leaving the filter as is (it doesn't hold much oil anyway) if you've only put a couple hundred klicks on it since last year.

Couldn't agree more. It's such cheap peace of mind. Even with just a few hundred miles per year, it picks up contaminates, and sitting over the winter, condensation to a small degree. I prefer to be anal, and change it regularily as well. This can never hurt the resale value as well,...any potential buyer will pay a premium for that well maintained vehicle.
