You don't need to tune anything. Just get a map from A GOOD SOURCE, flash it, then have your laptop read what the car is doing. From there, you post that log online and someone will look at it and give you advice about how your car is running.
What's a uppipe and downpipe? How does it effect the emissions of a car? I live in MD and every other year we have to take our car in for emissions check. Is a PITA.
What type of power would you be looking at with stock turbo and stock fuel system?
The '08 Sti has the capability of running multiple maps with a turn of the Si drive selector. I haven't read of anyone decoding that matrix yet but I look forward to listening/reading about it. It seems like you could switch to the economy map for MPG if it was tuned. I would want to have it tuned after purchase but would just want a linear map made. I have no interest in making more emissions. I've wanted the ability to run multiple maps, on the fly, on my motorcycles for years. Flip/Turn the switch and run a reduced power map, that is still healthy for the engine. Another map for full power Mr. Sulu

Good quality free maps. I've logged the stage I for 120 miles now, no knocks IDC max in the 80's.
Notice the input from multiple logs on that thread and the adjustments made by Gabe.
He now sells a stage II map (requires downpipe) that he will "tune" for your car based on logs.
The thing is, the Sti does not have a narrow power band. The 07's and 08's do have a shitty factory tune which causes lag. Oddly the EU maps don't have this same issue, so it appears emissions is in fact at fault here.
With a reflashed map -- even Subaru offers one that some say works power is back to where it was for 06; i.e. all over the damn place with a bit of trail out at higher rpms.

As a former owner of 2 S2000s, I would never say that the car's extremely narrow powerband is a plus, and I'm not sure many would advocate the extremely narrow powerband as one of the car's better attributes. Nonetheless, given the car's other strengths, I was willing to overlook the narrow powerband. I don't think I would be willing to overlook the issue in a car like the STI, though (lower revs, more weight, more of a daily driver, etc.).
