Maybe, depending on how the battery cells get damaged - the Teslas that have caught fire after crashes or even incidental damage, plus batteries simply exploding in consumer electronics, are good examples of this. Yes they can catch fire, but so can the 10 gallons of gasoline you have in your car today.

The one thing 20 years of electric cars on the roads have shown us is that explosions are not that common nor catastrophic.
