As was already mentioned, I doubt the RS4 will perform much (if any) better than the E46 M3 in most conditions. The E90 M3 will have more power than the outgoing E46 and will more than likely weigh the same.

The RS4 has considerably more power than the current S4, and considering that most head-to-heads between the S4 and E46 M3 have shown the S4 to be just slightly faster, the RS4 will likely easily beat the current E46 M3. Judging by past performance and considering the design philosophies of both companies haven't changed, I'd say it will end up being the same end result:
The RS4 will be just a tad faster due to it's AWD and gismos, but the E90 M3 will feel more rewarding to drive and more driver involved.
Tim, I think you should get the E90 M3...I too, am a bit BMW-biased, but there's a reason for that...the cars they've produced in the past, and their philosophy of a driver-oriented machine instead of just fast. I tend to think of BMW as the european Honda, which is why I like both. But Audi is closing the gap quickly in performance and even on the driver-oriented approach, but they'll always be a step behind BMW in the latter cuz they tend to want to put more luxury in all their cars, even their performance versions.

How much idoes this new RS4 go for?
My main concern about the E90 M3 is affordability. I've heard rumors about BMW pricing it at over $75K!!! Thats $20K more than the current model. That will price a lot of current M3 owners, like me, out of reach of the E90 M3, or for a few more G's, buy a 997 S.

I hear what your saying about the pricing on the E90......I think it's going to be way up there. Some people are saying it can't be over $10k more than the E46.....but I think a lot of people are going to be shocked.... especially the first year it's released...

I have to break from the crowd and go with the RS4. I just am more in the mood for luxury in my old age. And since my next car will be in addition to my S, I want an auto for the commutes, mebbe even a CVT. Also, 4 doors is a must, so for me, an RS4 is a better option, BUT, if I were giving up my S, OR my life was in a different point, the M might have been a better choice.

I believe the RS4 only comes in manual. I am not sure if they can use the DSG system with that much torque yet. I know they are working on it.
Don't be fooled. The RS4 is not going to be a luxury cruiser.
The only thing that the current M3 can keep up with will be 0-60mph. Beyond that it will be looking at the tailpipes of the RS4.
I voted for the E90M3 because I also feel that it will be a more of a drivers car, but if I lived in a place where it snowed and rained a lot I would go for the Audi because of its Quattro system.
