Slick move. Forming a personal preference between two cars by asking people you don't know on a message board which one they prefer. Well, at least you're asking the question in an environment where you'll be sure to get unbiased opinions.

I say go drive the Z4 and pick the one you like the best. You and your wife should make the choice based on which fits you better. No one's opinion should make up your mind for you.

Just go drive both back to back and buy which you prefer. But do remember this, Z4 3.0 is considerably more money. The 2.5 is in the same price range. Even with the more expensive 3.0, the S is still much more fun to drive. Having said that, the 3.0 has many more features and amenities, and as it should for that kind of money.
For a fair comparison, compare the S to the Z4 2.5 (same money), and see the obvious advantage of one car in almost every way.

You can't search for "z4" because the search requires at least four letters in the words. At least I couldn't.
I don't think there's any harm in test driving both. That's what I did before buying the S2000.
By the numbers, the S2000 and the Z4 3.0 are comparable in overall performance; those were the two cars I compared, too. The Z4 has a higher sticker price, but I'm not sure it's more costly per mile or per year. The BMW I6 engine should last forever, while the S2000 engine hasn't been around long enough to tell yet.
On initial test drives, the Z4's greater torque will be noticeable unless you're used to high revving engines. If you are used to high revving engine, you'll probably find the S2000's more flexible and useful. I didn't fully appreciate the S2000 engine from a test drive, but I'm definitely glad I have it now.
The main thing I didn't like about the Z4 was that its interior seemed very poorly arranged. Many controls were not in my reach from a driving position, and the visibility was worse - in particular, I was concerned that the visibility was not that great even with the top down. The S2000, in contrast, fit me perfectly, and everything was within reach. People significantly wider than me may feel differently, though.
My wife thinks the S2000 is incredibly cute and wonderful, so I didn't have any conflicts there.

looks are a subjective thing...(s looks better
performance - it's a wash...the z has way more torque so it feels faster but really isn't
handling - s2000
price - s2000
amenities/comfort - z4
reliability - s2000
price aside the z4 is probably a nicer commuter car. it is a little less cramped, revs lower and has nicer features like heated seats, nicer radio.
in the real world we live in price is always a factor and i couldn't afford the z4 i would have wanted. additionally i don't trust bmw reliability as much as honda.
