Default S3 or S2000

Hi All

I am new to this site and I am after some usefull info..

I currently drive a mk1 Audi s3 quattro, I've had it for a few years, as fun as the s3 is I miss the driving experience of my old mk1 MX5 and I've heard the S2000 is, in some ways, the upgrade to this

I've had my eyes on an S2000 for a while but Im currently summing up weather to remap and do up the audi a bit or to switch to the S2000, what do you guys think?
Ive have heard a mixed bag of reviews with the engine saying the vtec comes in too late but Ive never been in one myself so I dont know

What are they actually like to drive? good experience?
Handling?
Costs?

any other info worth knowing?

Thanks guys

Before anything else, test drive one (perhaps you can find a local owner who would be willing to let you drive and answer questions?). The S2K is a wonderful machine but needs to be used as designed to get maximum enjoyment. It will feel slow to your S3 but it will more than likely handle better.

will it? both cars are pushing the 240bhp mark and the S2000 is considerably lighter
by the book, the 0-60 time of the S2K is 0.4 faster, im not sure who would win a drag though...

I doubt a lot of us have had experience with the S3 in the States. Horsepower output might be similar but most sportscars have more torque than the S2000. Just know that it isn't as easy to get anymore output from the S2000 as it is from the S3.

You should post in the UK forum and seek for a local to lend you a ride / test drive.

Well, I have driven an A3, and for me, I'd take the S - lighter, more responsive, manual transmission, and topless motoring. If you get a pre-2004 model, just keep it revved over 6k all the time

In terms of pure fun, obviously the S2000 will be a huge step up from anything you'll ever get the S3 to be. But of course the S3 will have many strengths as a daily driver that the S2000 won't.

I own a TT-RS and an S2000, I really like my S2000, but if I had to pick only one, it would be the TT-RS. For me the S2000 wouldn't cut it for a daily drive.

I'd keep the S3, or better yet keep it and pick up an S2000 as a fun car.

Two very different cars, obviously. But I get trying to choose between them.

Both are fun, in their own way. Assuming practicality is not a significant factor (otherwise choice would be obvious), it comes down to which type of driving fun you find more appealing to live with.

I use my S for 3 season dd (US North East). I have an Audi for winter. My commute is 80 miles, and I'm North of 50. I couldn't imagine driving any other car.

I can't speak to the Audi but I just got home from a few days out of town driving my TL SH-AWD - which until I got the S2000, was a blast to drive. It is about 60 degrees here - so I took out my S put the top down and went out for a little while at 10 p.m. VTEC kicking in and punching it to 90 on rural back roads with no traffic - with the top down and the stars bright.... it just doesn't get much better than that.

I agree that you're saying the S3 is more practical but I really miss the thrills of driving my eunos, the audi has to be driven on the limit to have fun, its a bit too quiet and refined inside, I like that raw driving experience you get from a 2 seat drop top. A car is my toy now that im older so I'm looking for fun over practicality. I'm just trying to sum up all the pro's and con's at the moment.

Why do you say keep above 6k on a pre-04 model...is the vetec slow to kick in? did they sort this issue with the later models?
