Interesting decision to stick with 17s on the BRZ. I would have thought they'd use 18s from a WRX or STi. I hope they at least went with 17x8s. Probably just a depressing 17x7.5 though.

I don't feel it needs it, just thought that they would BLING it out. every manufacturer is going bigger
2013 WRX special editions came with 18s. STis have stock 18s now.
Special BRZ = special 18s was the thought.

STI's have had stock 18s for a while and WRXs have had stock 17s for a good while. This site has a lot of great year by year info for all Subarus:

Can't find any info to support that the 2013 special edition WRX had 18" wheels. They are just the standard wheels painted black instead of gray. No mention of it in any press release, blog post, or magazine article that I can find. STI, yes, WRX, no. If you look at the link above it shows the special edition wheels up close and they are 17".
The FR-S/BRZ are already gutless enough without needing to haul around more unsprung weight.
Performance > Bling and its already short on performance.
Nah, I had an '11 so I pretty much know the go to sources. Also, I immediately recognized it as the same wheels I had. Pretty nice wheels for stockers, I guess that's why I never felt inclined to change them. Another interesting fact, Subaru has used a different lug pattern on WRX and STi for most of their existence. Some think it's so people with WRX's can't easily use the STi wheels...

I'll admit, I saw a picture of the tire on a 13' WRX special edition and I "think" it looked like a 18.
I hope you didn't waste to much time researching all that

in the world of manufacturing, if the part weighs less, it can cost less when it comes to steel. 5x100 vs 5x114.3 might take less material. Being that it doesn't really need to handle as much abuse through the powertrain and brakes, it can have less material. Subaru has to have something up their sleeve besides trying not to upset STi owners.
I'm not sure how much strength simply moving the bolt pattern outward really gives you if you kept the mounting face as a constant variable.
I'm sure many FRS and BRZ owners are happy that they went with the 5x114.3 over 5x100.
