thats a very strong car, although, the impact alone would kill you even if the steering column didn't go through your chest

:clapclapclap: Best use of one I've seen yet Not that they aren't handy tourist rentals, much like a scooter, but they don't belong on a highway, same as a scooter.

That car held together, but your brain smashing against the inside of your head (like Dale Ernhardt) will ultimately kill you.

Erm, not exactly. Dale died when his body stopped (due to a 5-point racing harness) but his head kept moving, which severed blood vessels at the base of his brain and attach to his spine, and he internally bled to death. That is why a HANS device is important, it keeps your head from moving too quickly in relation to your body.

Not bad at all. But as stated, the passengers would die, because no car has a HANS device installed, let alone this one.

That said though, I'm interested to see how Mercedes' impact-damped seats perform. Hopefully it will be another feather in their safety cap...

Wow, I knew they were small, but I didn't realize you could drive a Smart car by remote control too!

I'd much rather have 100,000 of these on the road than 100,000 SUVs.

Keep in mind that passenger cars have protection as well. Occupants' torsos aren't as tightly locked down in passenger cars as they are in race cars. The head restraint provided by the HANS in a race car is provided to some (much lesser) extent by the airbags. And the need for a head restraint is somewhat lessened by the absence of a heavy helmet.

Don't get me wrong -- I'd much rather crash in a caged race car with a six-point harness and a HANS -- but you're not completely screwed in a passenger car either.

maybe, but I'd rather be in a real car or truck than a "smart" car. And I wouldn't let anyone I cared about tool around on a freeway in a glorified golf cart.
