SONOFAB. . .
User needs required...
-budget
-must have features (mpg, awd, manual, etc. etc. ???)
-optional features (want - not need)
I was cross shopping the first generation element in awd with 5speed (market price was around $6-8k depending on condition and mileage) and decided i want something with warranty and better MPGs. I'm settling on a 2014+ impreza 5-door 2.0i (17" wheels and 5speed options).

budget - whatever insurance gives me
features - runs well, cheap af to maintain, doesn't attract Camrys that push it over curbs and into fences and trees
optional - my gf sometimes drives the car, so if I got a manual, it'd force her to finally learn
Well what did you like about it besides reliability?
If you don't need the riding high up part or awd, I guess a Fit is cheap, has huge cargo ability, is supposed to be fun to drive, gets good mileage and will run beyond nuclear winter. In black I think the look dweebie uber-cool. They also could force your GF to learn to drive a stick.
I suppose a Kia Soul could be sort of similar to the Element.

motherpussbucket- i like the element.
let's hope the MF insurance company comes thru with a decent settlement to make getting into another vehicle- perhaps the awesome element- more feasible.
this is MF crappy ass news.

Fit
Juke
Soul
Chevy Volt (lease with all the Fed and CA hippie juice makes this very workable)
But Dave is currently winning the open invitation for trolling, with Bullwings getting an Honorable Mention for Most Expensive Solution (and fwiw, no, I couldn't even buy my own place now).
If you like an Element that much, why not stretch your budget a bit more and get an other one?
Good call on the Fit. I recommended it to my mom but she got a citroen Berlingo instead
No idea why but her choice.
An old civic is also cheap af to maintain. But that might be to old for you?
Oh yeah, sorry to hear your Element is totaled, always suck if someone else writes off your car
