If the spray paint and auto paint are chemically different than a there might be a solvent that will disolve the spray paint but not harm the auto paint.

If he has a can of the spray paint or knows what kind it was you could spray some on a test piece of plastic and try mineral spirits, adhesive label remover, goo gone, graffiti related product, something recommended by your local paint store, etc. Moving from the weakest solvent to the strongest and see what will dissolve the spray paint. There are lots of solvents that will not eat through auto paint.

Auto finishes should be much tougher and may hold up to a weaker solvent that will eat through a can of cheap spray paint.

It will likely be a total pain in the ass to scrub the purple away and be a giagantic mess not worth doing. But you probably could find something that would work if you put the effort in. It is probabaly much easier to repaint in cheap spray paint in the color you want though. A solvent will not likely be a spray on and it melts off, you are talking lots of elbow grease.

It's not these days. There always has been, and always will be, younger people who can't afford certain parts and who are new to car modifying. These people will perform modifications that seem questionable to people who have been doing this for awhile. Back in 2000 I was putting a cherry bomb exhaust on an Integra. Now I know not to do that. We've all made some questionable decisions early on in our 'car modifying career'.

Frankly, I question the quality of care given to a car by anyone who paints its engine bay purple.

Do not buy a poorly cared for car that does not run, unless it's a total project car, and not something you intent to drive. There's literally hundreds of millions of cars out there, so why settle for a total piece?

Best answer.

I wish you luck with the car and hope you have fun with it, I really do. But this is still the best answer.
