Starter Bike
First off, I realize theres another thread asking about what a good starter bike is and both of these bikes are mentioned in it, but without hijacking his thread.. I made my own.
I would like to get a bike sometime soon.. My friend just recently bought a FS500F brand new and he is in love with it... Personally i dont mind the looks, but I like the looks of the SV650S alot more. Some questions I have though.....
The FS500F has a full fairing which Ive heard makes the wind just got right out around you and you barely feel it.. (Coming from my Dad who owns an 04 Goldwing ABS 1800) ... Based on that, Since the SV650S only has a "half" fairing, Does it still block some of the wind?? Better than the 500??
Also, Does the 650 have significantly more punch than the 500?? Friend with the 500 says its plenty quick for him..
Im mostly concerned about the fairing because Ive heard it sucks riding highway and such without a fairing.. Im leaning towards the 650S in this comparison though..
Please.. Share your knowledge and Experiece!! THANKS!

there are a few things to consider when looking at a new bike...While fairings CAN help with drag and overall reduce wind that you feel, a half fairing bike liek the sv650 will easily do that. Further, half fairing bikes are generally less painful (on the wallet) when it comes to dropping them. Shiny plastics get ruined pretty easily, so on that note, a half naked bike can be a good thing. As far as having enough punch, a 500 will have more than enough punch for starting out and learning to ride.
I would definitely go with the sv650s it you were going to buy brand new(which I recommend against for your first bike.) But if you must I would get the "s" and buy the lower fairing too. It has a much more sportier appearence, but the seating position is alittle more aggressive. You will find that after you put some significant miles on the bike and are ready for something else, you can make the sv a track bike. Just take the MSF course and practice emeregency braking in a empty parking lot. Have fun.
sv is a good, anything lite would work tho. keep the bike weight down
wearing a full face helmet, in doing this a fairing is not that inportant

I was out riding yesterday with some friends, We switched bikes and I rode a std SV-650 for a while.
That is a great little bike, it's really fun to ride, has great power on tap (shifting is almost optional). I found it far more enjoyable to ride than another friends CBR 600RR which requires a much more committed riding style.
I wouldnt consider it just a starter bike its a great bike you could ride for years.
My friend sold his Superhawk a few years back and bought the SV for a commuter bike, it has 25K on and still runs great.
