Talk me out of buying an E39 M5

I can't believe you'd want to buy another non-warranty used BMW after you put $28k into a used $14k BMW.
I have ridden in a couple E39 M5's and they are/were sweet rides. I just wouldn't trust the long-term reliability and repair cost. For $30-40k, frankly, I'd get the Pontiac G8 GXP and call it a day.

just keep the S and get a used minivan or suv for your family. you'll appreciate not having to bend over to get your kid in/out of the car repeatedly for the next 2-3 years.

E39 M5 is a great car - good looking, fantastic engine, fun big car handling. On the flip side, the potential cost of repairing any mechanical or electronic issues scares me, and I'm not crazy about the recirculating ball steering system.

Well, the dilemma is solved, for now.
The one that I was looking at sold for more than I was willing to pay:
eBay link
I drove the car this last weekend, and it was basically a brand-new car. 14K miles, one owner, always garaged--it even smelled new inside.
I was willing to go to $36K, maybe $37K at the max. Someone bid $39K, and the seller sold early. Whoever bought it got a very sweet car. Not many E39 M5s left with that kind of mileage...

I would buy a honda 4cyl accord which is great on gas and sell the old m3 which still has great resale use that money to mod the s2k which has more potential at becoming a better track car (Aftermarket parts, S2ki sponsers)

2. Scared of spending $30-40K on a 6-year-old BMW M-car without a warranty. I've been down this road before in my M3... I bought it for $14K and have since put $28K more into the car.
