The Tesla Model 3

The problem with electric cars for me is how early stage they are. They should be a lease, not buy.
The innovation curve is going to kick in and these cars are going to drop in value quickly. $100k Tesla with 250 mile range is going to look pretty poor next to a Ford/GM product with 350 mile range for $40k. That's why I think the model 3 is smart, they need to go down market and quickly.
What is really the difference between models? Shortly it's going to come down to size of vehicle and range. What makes current auto industry different is each manufacturer has their own niche. Some build killer small motors that run forever, think Honda/Toyota, BMW/Merc focus on luxury with performance, VW on value and the domestic hit the full range but suffer in certain areas.
The electric car will be more obviously a combination of purchased parts. Even the current Tesla gets extremely close to a stripped down vehicle with a giant Ipad. Model 3 is apparently even more basic.
When gas prices were $4 you saw some Prius owners paying for higher capacity battery packs, I think you could see more of this sort of thing. Obviously the amount of power in these units can kill you but generally speaking it's a lot easier to swap out a battery pack then increase the displacement of your motor.
