Default Tesla Roadster

Motor Trend Video

Seems like a pretty interesting car. It's fast AND safe for the environment. Here's a question...if Tesla was able to bring production costs down over the years (to say less than 50k) would you own one of these over an S2000?

A lotus elise that runs on electric and is plenty fast. If it gets down to $50k why not. I'd take one assuming all the problems get resolved by then.

Yeah, the biggest question now is whether Tesla can work out all the bugs over the next few years. If so, I think they have a hit on their hands. Only time will tell...

it seems cool enough, but I'd wait a few years to get one because of the bugs you mention.

Freaking love it. Don't have anything like the cash for one, though...

Don't see how a $45k Elise plus a ~$30k battery pack could go for $50k!

hell yeah - if it is trouble free and costs almost nothing to operate, I'd be all over it for <50k

I would never buy it until I can 'fill it up' in 5 minutes or less. Until then I will pass.

Very true, but tesla isn't buying brand new elises, stripping out the motor, transmission, etc. and popping their equipment in so the cost of the lotus chassis they're using isn't equivalent to a brand new elise.

Also, the cost of the battery pack/electric motor, while somewhat expensive now, should drop in price significantly over the years as more electric cars are produced and production techniques are improved.

So a cheaper Tesla in the future certainly seems possible, but whether it will actually happen is another thing.

It's good for the environment?

I really don't see the benifit unless you tell me electric power is safe for the environment or manufacturing and disposing of chemical/battery is safe for the environment.

See the media is telling you that buying an electric car is somehow going to help the environment when there are hundreds of millions maybe a billion IC cars on the road and more to come as India and China start to drive.

Could you please tell me how a few thousand electric cars make a difference in that equation especially when it's a toy car. Meaning I doubt this is taking the place of anyones DD.

I do not buy the global warming hysteria BTW and I don't think electric cars which run indirectly on fossil fuels do anything either way.

And until Al Gore gives up all modern consumer goods and stops flying on an airplane then I won't either.

Most electricity in the US, about 70%, is generated using fossil fuels, especially coal.
thank you for playing "this car makes me feel better about myself game"

Good point.
One of the biggest drawback of an electric car is the charging time.
