Oh wow, see, I'm glad I posted here. That would completely rule the A3 out for me. The A4 is 25% to each wheel all the time?
But when needed it can send 100% of available TQ to the rear. I wouldn't completely rule the newer(2009+) A3 out. The haldex Gen 4 is nothing like the previous Gen 2.

I'd personally take a fully loaded subaru legacy over an audi A4. When we test drove the A4, both my father and I were unimpressed with the car especially considering the price of it (price difference is huge between a legacy and A4). Your clearly paying a huge mark up for the audi badge which I just can't can't personally do.
Well, here lies the problem. First of all, once you load the legacy up with Audi standards (leather, blah blah blah) the price difference isn't that huge. Further more, the 4 banger is so so, and the 6 isn't the greatest either. The 4WD system is indeed great, but the quality isn't in the same league. I will go this weekend to VW, and check out the 5 door GTI.

The lease price on a Legacy with leather is in the low $300s to mid $300s. The A4 is $399. Once optioned equally, the difference is not that great. I will however, agree that when you start loading these cars with options, that's when the price starts to balloon.

How about the VW R32? Too small? GTi sized with a strong torquey six, AWD and DSG auto tranny. Down side for you though is two-doors. Retains re-sale value well.

how about the Golf Wagon (aka jetta wagon). I'd save a bit of $ and have even more of a trunk.

I love the A3, but I don't think I could justify the cost.

The cars on the menu now are the 4 door gti, the A4, and the legacy. The a3 has been dropped for the gti. I thought about it and figured this....in NJ, we get very few serious snow days. On those days, I can just take the crv IF I need to drive and call it a day. For the rest of the time, 2wd should suffice, so the gti might be a good idea. I will go to the dealers this weekend and see what's what.

I drove a last gen legacy spec-b and it was a GREAT car...wish I had the money for it when I drove it
I made this very statement to my neighbor last Thursday. The last gen Legacy Spec-B is a really great drivers car...if you need 4 doors and need to look professional at work. A sleeper car that flew under the radar.
