Of all the hobbies I have, dirt biking is my favourite. And in the last five years, dirt bikes have improved SO much! Now is a good time to buy (hell, I honestly think in another five years, that'll be the real time to buy; EFI is on its way for dirt bikes).
You've got a ton of questions to ask yourself. Like what kind of riding do you want to do (MX, offroad - in the desert or in the woods, supermoto, dual sport), what kind of bike do you want (four stroke, 2 stroke, big bike, little bike, MX bike, offroad bike), how much maintenance do you want to do or how competent are you at it, how much are you willing to spend, how good of a rider are you right now and how quickly do you think you could learn?

Dirtbiking certainly teaches you the basics of riding and bike control. And if you want to ride well, you need to be in good shape. It's tougher than it looks! But hands down, it's the best type of riding!
Chris.
