Thinking of moving on?

The only time I see it practical to get rid of the S is if there's a car that's similar but does everything better in every way (thus making the S obsolete). One of the cars I would probably drop the S for is an E92 M3 or GTR because that would render my S useless. But at any rate, good luck haha...

You can get a nice STi with a lot of power and room for your needs. 04-07's are pretty solid, with the 04-05 having the better factory tune.
The RX8 would also fit your description a little better and is more akin to the S2000. The only gripes I ever hear about the RX8 are the gas mileage.
I would also consider an R32 if I were to be in your shoes again. I loved my S2000 and went to an 04 STi, which I also love. but the R32's are just so sweet! The only thing with the R32, since I have two kids I can't fit their huge double stroller in the back of that thing!

I sold my ap1 for an R32. Thought it would be more 'practical'.
Sold the R32 in 5 months because it was boring and I missed the S2000.
Now I have an AP2. As a second car, the R32 would be awesome but as my only car it wasn't as fun. The AWD and interior was awesome, the power was a little lacking and the mpg's weren't as good as I expected but I would buy another one if I needed a 2nd car.
Keep the car and get a beater.

STI is the car for you...
My goddamn CEL came on AGAIN last night, 4th time it's done this. First time Honda replaced valves and refinished the head, second they just did a valve adjustment, 3rd it just went away.
Car, I'm trying really hard to just keep you, don't make me angry.

Sti, 2006 was the best year, best looks and safer tune than a 2007. Ideally you'll want one that has all documentation and low miles, if you can find one that was retuned right after being purchased by a reputible place like COBB tuning that would be best, but its like a unicorn

You won't want to own an E46 M3 you can buy for less than 20K, I looked and they are all at or around 100K miles and probably need a ton of bushings and other maintenance. The cost of parts will make you puke compared to your S2000. If you need more room and want something that is fun and drives similar to a S2000 the RX-8 is a good replacement.
Rx8 is worse in every way except storage. The e46 is nice, but it sounds tinny and I'm sure maintenance is quite costly. The s2000 shouldn't be as big of a problem now that you and your gf live together. Just take her car.
Wait wait wait, I call BS on your dad working at BMW, all the bmw owners/fans on these boards assure me that owning a BMW is, if anything, marginally more expensive to own than any other car, that all the issues are completely exaggerated! Jk of course.
I like the M3 as well, but owning out of warranty with higher miles can get costly. Is it worth it? To the people I know yes, but I've seen their faces those days when funny light start flickering and they;re limping home... and then later it's just a small repair.
For the price of buying and owning an M3 plus the money you'll lose selling your s2k prematurely, you can afford a beater. But hey, drive the bimmer more, if you fall head over heels for it, go for it. If you feel that it's the best compromise for what you're looking for, don't do it because you're doing this on a budget.
