I like the M3 as well, but owning out of warranty with higher miles can get costly. Is it worth it? To the people I know yes, but I've seen their faces those days when funny light start flickering and they;re limping home... and then later it's just a small repair.
For the price of buying and owning an M3 plus the money you'll lose selling your s2k prematurely, you can afford a beater. But hey, drive the bimmer more, if you fall head over heels for it, go for it. If you feel that it's the best compromise for what you're looking for, don't do it because you're doing this on a budget.
He works in the service department. All he sees really is people bringing in BMWs with problems all the time and what it costs to fix them.

I typically only own anything for a year.
ADD anyone?
Uh, that's not ADD at all? If anything it's that I enjoy the build up and fun of having a "new" car that I can do things to and after I've had it for a while that wears off. It's somehting I'm well aware of and am trying to stop myself from doing.

That may be so, but if you ask honda or toyota service techs, they'll say their cars are rock solid. For instance, I always get a kick when I visit the local VW dealer and see most of the advisors driving japanese cars.

The only things that make my M3 ownership more costly than any other cars are gas (it's thirsty) and insurance (a good bit more than either the S2000 or my prior Cayman S). It's been 100% reliable and trouble-free, but it's newer and has maybe 21K miles.

Well, it topped all other BMW models in a reliability survey. A friend has about double the miles, w/ DCT and a fair amount of mods. He beats the shit out of it at the track. Other tracked M3's I'm aware of have held up just fine as well.

Yes, it will prob. cost more to maintain and repair over 200K miles than a Lexus, but driving a Lexus means being deprived the joy of driving an M3. Kind of a moot point for me, since I've never even hit 90K miles on any car I've owned since college.

A friend has an E36 M3 at around 277k miles. Still on the original engine. Everything he's replaced goes eventually. Not had one problem with it. One example doesn't cover all, but I'd say the general theme for cars is if you keep them maintained and in the way the engineers wanted the car to be kept, you shouldn't have problems.

You can get a nice STi with a lot of power and room for your needs. 04-07's are pretty solid, with the 04-05 having the better factory tune.

The RX8 would also fit your description a little better and is more akin to the S2000. The only gripes I ever hear about the RX8 are the gas mileage.

I would also consider an R32 if I were to be in your shoes again. I loved my S2000 and went to an 04 STi, which I also love. but the R32's are just so sweet! The only thing with the R32, since I have two kids I can't fit their huge double stroller in the back of that thing!

Sold the R32 in 5 months because it was boring and I missed the S2000.
Now I have an AP2. As a second car, the R32 would be awesome but as my only car it wasn't as fun. The AWD and interior was awesome, the power was a little lacking and the mpg's weren't as good as I expected but I would buy another one if I needed a 2nd car.

Keep the car and get a beater.
he looking for something reliable??? not VW which might be the worst car to pick for that...come on rx8 what a nice handling car that breaks down monthly and gets worse mpgs that a v8 truck.

STI is the car for you...

2006+ RX8's aren't that awful on reliability. They fixed the engine issues that year. It's the 04-05's that you need to hide from.

I sold my Mugen S2K back in 2008 to my cousin and sold most of my parts to a friend because I was moving to Japan for few years. Few years later, I am back in the Middle East making good money. During my time off, I think about what I should buy for my next "fun" car. I have a Nissan Titan and I drive that when I am in US which is great since it has lots of room and I can haul stuff. I thought about Nissan GTR...best performance for its price but then again I dont want to spend 80k on a car and spending 20-30k easy on Mods. I spent over 20k on my S2K and it was awesome. Looks and handling. I had Motons suspension, Mugen front and rear bumpers, hardtop and etc, so I know I will quickly be spending money on GTR. Then, I thought about Nissan 370Z Nismo but its just too big and other cars but frankly its really hard to beat the price of a S2K and how "cheaper" parts are. GTR wing are over 3K and you can get almost front, rear, and fenders for that much with S2k. Bottom line...I think I will buy the new Ducati and call it day for need for speed and maybe used something Honda for fun.

I'd be wary of the new 1199 or the Extreme, whatever they end up calling it. New aluminum subframe connects the head stock to the engine and the trellis is gone. I'd be waiting a good year or two before going that route.
