just wanted to know what you guys thought about this bike.
(+/-), your own personal experience/opinions etc.
i've searched other forums also, but the more opinions the better.

If you live where there are lots of twisties (as I do), the 749 is a wonderful bike. If you live in the flat lands (Texas?) it's not so great.
Dealing with more complex valve adjustments every year or two is not a big deal in my book. Visit one of the Ducati sites if you want personal experiences with the bike:
Speedzilla
Club Desmo
Cowin-Tech

Valve jobs are not a big deal on a Duc. I do mine myself on my 916. If you can identify most common tools you can handle the work yourself.
Bottom line is:
You can buy more refined and faster Jap machinery for less money. But it's not a Duc. You just need to decide what your priorities are.

I was thinking the suspension bits are downrated from the bigger models, aren't they (except for some special 749 edition)? If I'm buying a Duc I'd want the full experience, not just the visual design and sound.

I double-checked and right-you-are Scott. I must be thinking of the Monster or some other Duc 750 that got non-fully-adjustable front suspension. Then I checked prices for 749's and, whoa, is that some sticker shock for a 750 or what ?!
The shape has grown on me over the last year or so, I have to admit I'm thinking of trying the 749S (not sure if the models are the same over there) which has a slightly higher power engine this year than the std 749.
In the past I have owned both a 748SP and 748SPS, but defected to an R1 a while back, which is great for the extra power but without the Ducati soul that the twin gives.
Servicing was expensive at main dealers, probably twice what you pay for a jap bike, but you pays your money.....
Ive been trying to stay away from the local dealer, too much temptation
