Toyota Camry hybrid smacks down the Civic hybrid
I don't go into whats standard, but lets assume they are similar equipment.
The Civic hybrid for $22K while the Camry goes for $26K so it's not huge difference but not insignificant either.
But for $4K step up to the Camry you get a larger car (+700 lbs) and larger passenger volume 90 cu ft (civic) to 101 cu ft (camry).
The Civic has better EPA mileage 49/51 vs Camry 43/37. But R&T did a semi-controlled test where the cars were driven on the same roads at the same speeds and came up with overall fuel econ of 40 mpg for the Civic hybrid and 37 mpg for the Camry hybrid. The non-hybrid civic got 33 mpg on same route.
So the Civic hybrid gets better mileage but not tremendously better than the Camry. But the Camry is a lot faster. 0-60 10.3 sec (civic) vs 7.3 sec (Camry). 0-90 the Civic Hybrid took 23 sec (holy 1970's Batman) while the Cmary hybrid did 0-90 in 15 sec. The non hybrid civic did 0-60 and 0-90 in 8.9 sec and 19.6 sec.
Civic non hybrid 140hp
Civic Hybrid net power 110 hp
Camry Hybrid net power 192 hp
Close to double the power for the Camry with +700 lbs to move around and they got similar mpg in this real world test.

4k or 20% is a pretty big difference in price. Definitely puts the Camry in another class. It is nice, however, to see the hybrid engines make it into lower cost cars.

I don't know if I'd call that a smackdown, but there is a definite advantage for performance and luxury with the Camry. If Toyota made a Corolla hybrid, then they'd have a true apples to apples comparison with the Civic. Why not use the Accord vs. Camry hybrid?

It's a fair comparison which confirms what we already know: Honda hybrids are not as good as Toyota Hydrids, but the Civic looks better than the Prius. Hybrids rarely make financial sense, but they apparently make a political statement.
