Two Argument Points on the Skyline / GT-R
Someone I know got into a very heated argument with me about Skylines / GT-Rs
Basically: long story short.
His argument was that The Infiniti V35 / Nissan G35 is a Skyline.
My argument can basically be summed up by the Wiki page:
The V35 broke with Skyline tradition. There was no straight-6, no turbo, and no GT-R, a decision which extended to all later Skylines. The intention had been for the model to use a different name, a decision reversed by Renault/Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.[26] who choose to gear the V35 towards the luxury-sport market.
Japanese tuners mostly ignored the V35 Skyline, the 2006 Tsukuba Super Lap Battle had not a single V35 entrant.[1] Tuners such as Mines, Amuse, Hosaka, Garage Defend, M Speed, Nagisa, MCR, HKS, & Top Secret continued developing R32-R34 GT-Rs as time attack cars.
Apart from the name and the name alone, the 'Skyline's of today and yesterday (R34, 33, 32) share little to no similarities. The G35 is almost entirely based on the 350Z. It shares no true blood with the rest of the Skyline range.
His second argument:
The R35 GTR is not a Skyline.
My argument: one only has to look at the tail lights, the twin turbo six engine, and the high tech drive train and computer system to see that it is simply a glorified Skyline GTR. If it weren't for the name being associated with cheaper less high performance cars, it would have carried on the Skyline name. When Nissan called it the GT-R, they distanced themselves from that image. It even carries on the R35 name as a next iteration of the R34.
Discuss.

Going strictly by what they did with the naming convention, the GT-R isn't a Skyline. The G35 was badged Skyline overseas.
But that is dumb.
The GT-R is the obvious continuance beyond the R34. Anyone who doesn't see it is...blind.
