I like the MB - the AMG engines pull like trains - but that's one of my favorite BMW shapes in the 01 5. Tough choice, any significant difference in mileage or price? All things being equal, I'd go with the one with less miles.

Do you want a manual or automatic? I've had a go in both, the M5 sure pulls hard and is pretty pleasant to row gears in. The AMG is a little more comfortable, comes with a few extra gadgets and well, it's a different car for sure. If you can live with an auto, then I'd go with the AMG, especially if you were looking for a little more recognition or "status" (if that kind of stuff is important to you), but I'd say the M5 is a little sportier and probably more fun to drive too whilst the AMG is more effortless (power wise, if it's the 5.5 liter supercharged engine, it pulls pretty darn hard, and that's part of why the car is so effortless to drive). The AMG wagon would also have loads and loads of space in the boot.
Neither are going to be cheap to maintain and neither handle very well. I had higher expectations for the M5 when I drove it for the first time, but I guess it just makes it an even better daily driver which I can completely understand.
The AMG doesn't come in manual, so that might make your desicion.
If you don't want a manual, just get the e55 AMG it's the best car considering if you don't want manual you probably don't want the little things that come a long with it that the m5 might have over the e55. e55's have addicting torque.

I don't think they ever made a w210 E55 wagon. I think the E55 wagon came about with the W211 body (I could be wrong though). Just a FYI, the W210 body style E classes have a lot of rust issues (if the car is in a rust belt state).
Plenty of people with 5 series have complaints about the cost of up keep in years 3+ for their cars. Any dealer parts/repairs can be very expensive.
From what I've seen first hand (3 series and 5 series) and heard, BM aren't they tempting in the long run.
Similar vintage Honda. No problems.
