Dima, for the love of God go buy the Mustang GT or maybe just the 6 cylinder for lesser money, hell they might just give the damn car to you and pay you a little. Xviper is right, you never mentioned what year you wanted to compair just current to current, then you change your story. I think you want the mustang and should go buy the mustang.
what handles and performs better...i had two mustang gt convertibles and driven several new generation M3 convertibles. In my opinion the M3, cause handling and performance are all around terms and the M3 is an all around better performer, straight line drags are not what you buy that car for, i will bet in the hands of the same experienced driver the m will out handle a mustang on the track, period. and in daily life the m3 will out perform the mustang in reliability (general speaking, there are exceptions with every car), resale and depreciation, and fun to drive factor.
sure the mustang is fun and sounds good, it ever looks good and i still have a soft spot in my heart (cars are head and heart for me) for mustangs(excpet for the Mustang from about 1974-1988). both cars hold 4 and have trunks, but the bms has more room and comfort, quality of materials and workmanship, better seats, engine, gearbox, brakes...etc...so it also out performs the ford in general, subtle ways.
this is not about which car i would rather have, actually at this time not either, but maybe someday. this thread asked about which car handles and performs better. so in terms of every day life the m3.
cost, 0-60 times, upkeep and maintenance, desireability, coolness factor, etc...all other questions to answer...
oh..yeah..i just want to add that both my mustangs...1990 and 1997 were mechanical junk...thrown together with cheap materials and workmanship and full of outdated technology...and neither one held up over time, that can happen with an M3, but it is not as likely, they make less of them and they are hand assembled and cost twice as much to buy and maintain. and both my mustangs... when they ran... were fun except in the rain or around corners and sounded terrific.

Such a dumb thread, and the poster's right up there too. Ask a vague question and then bad mouth the M3 and everyone that says it's a great car??? Genius. All you've done is magazine race the two. Go get in an M3 and drive it around.
I've been in dozens on Mustangs and a couple M3's and I own a 330. If you only care about magazine racing, STFU, buy yer Mustang, and go show all the 01/02 M3 vert owners what dumbasses they are for not buying the same car as you.
Personally, if I won Mustang I wouldn't be able to dump it fast enough. There is more to a car than it's magazine numbers; like that God-awful sea of a square black plastic dash in the new mustangs, the God-awful suspension and numb steering; the horrible ride and endless shudders and rattles (and I've been in dozens of them with fewer than 5K miles on them, so don't think of telling me I don't know what I'm talking about).
The ride and steering feel in the M3 are so far beyond the Mustang... Fit and finish, same... Driver comfort, same...
Why do you continually bash the people that encourage you to go drive an M3; and why to you keep bad-mouthing it when it sure seems like you've never been in one?
Sure seems to me like you want people to help you justify getting the Ford instead of the BMW.

Don't see why anyone would cross shop a new Mustang with a new M3 as they appeal to much different tastes but they are closely matched on paper (except for price).
So if price is a consideration for you at all, get the Mustang and if you're rich then either mod your Mustang silly with the extra cash or just get an M3.
Performance wise, the Mustang is generally thought of as a straight line specialist with decent handling while the M3 is more of a high speed handler with decent straight line speed. So you have to ask yourself, how will you probably be driving the car most of the time and which do you fantasize more about: Pomona or the Nurburgring?
Image-wise, as a previous poster has pointed out, both are GAY as hell as convertibles (people will either think you're a prick in the BMW or a redneck honkie in the Stang) so you should go for a coupe version of either if you care at all about street cred as far as serious performance is concerned.
Otherwise, if youre into looking ghetto either will do just fine as a 'vert with some big chrome wheels and loud tunes bumping as you cruise at 5 mph - both do have some serious bling factor and IMHO the Mustang 'vert is less played out in this respect whereas the BMW has that certain ivy league bad boy classiness about it that's timeless.
If you really like convertibles AND performance AND universal street cred then why not go for a bona fide sports car and get an s2k?

...Then again if you NEED 4 seats and you don't ABSOLUTELY need to feel that BMW "precision" all the time then the new Stang 'vert starts to look like the best deal going...
...especially when you put an extra 5k into putting a vortec supercharger plus a 50 shot of nitrous in it, thus opening up a whole new world of putting some serious *hurt* on amost all of the Mustang convertible hater snobs out there (but kiss the warranty goodbye).
