Well, the M3 will still look good 10 years from now, the Mustang.....not likely. M3 has timeless class imo. Being that you don't care about this, just buy a 'stang.

If all you care about is performance, it's a wash. The mustang does not win this because it's cheaper, because you're comparing cars that cost the same amount (according to you.)

If braking, Interior refinement, quality of construction, handling (there is MUCH more to handling than skidpad numbers. much, much, much, MUCH more.) and road feel, and the billions of luxury features the M3 has over the Mustang mean absolutely nothing to you, then you're right there is no reason to purchase the M3 over the Mustang. Well except for the fact that it performs as well, feels better, costs the same amount and throws all those extra features in as a bonus.

Argh. I don't know why I'm replying to an already tired subject...

[disclaimer] Just my opinion on all this crap to follow... I'm just some dude on the internet. Who really cares what I think?

If you're asking which one will be more "fun" to drive, I would tell you to go drive them yourself. But what kind of "fun" are you looking for? If you're coming from an S2000, I would guess you possibly define "fun to drive" as being nimble and tossable, while revving a nice motor up to high RPM. If this is the case, I would wager dollars to donuts you'd be more happy in an '02 M3 than a Mustang. If you want to do smokey burnouts for fun, the Mustang GT will be more than happy to oblige I'm sure. (Not that you couldn't do this in the e46 as well...)

What kind of crowd do you run with? You're in LA, and we're so image conscious here, I'll bet you're one of the few people who would ever cross-shop a Bimmer vs. a Rustang (not my words.) Yeah yeah, image doesn't matter, blah blah blah. But if it does, who do you want to impress? The redneck high school kids (Mustang), or the Gold diggers (M3)? It's up to you. When I see someone driving a convertible M3, I think of someone with a lot of money who wants to be seen, and has to have "the best" regardless of if they know how to drive it or not (SMG anyone?). When I think of someone in a new Mustang, I think of the cheesy plastic interior, and someone who is trying to re-live the glory days of the 70's today. Retro design doesn't get a rise in my pants, sorry to say.

By the way, it might sound like I'm pitching one car over the other, but that's not the case. I have measured distaste for both vehicles, so take whatever I'm saying with a grain of salt.

Realize that if you drive around in So. Cal with a convertible Mustang (I hate the term 'vert'... it's so lame), you will look like a tourist who stopped at Budget and asked for the "fun" car to drive around while you visit the Hollywood sign and the Walk of Fame .

How tall are you? I've never sat in either car, but I'd bet there's not too much back seat room in the e46, and it would amaze me if the Mustang had LESS legroom in the rear.

Drive them both. That's all I can say. I imagine they are quite different cars, and if one doesn't stand out to you as the clear winner, perhaps you should just stick with the S2000 .
I'd rather get some research done before bothering some people who are trying to earn a living.
^^^you know... that's kinda what you're doing by posting this question on S2ki, right?

PS- I wonder if the responses would've been more polite if people knew you were a girl...

i understand that the M3 is more desirable, but it costs almost twice as much, and it is a maintenance nightmare
What kind of problems have u had with yours? I can't say that I've had too many issues with mine and the oil change is at least $110 and that's if u can get the oil for a bargain price of $12 a quart. I recently considered trading mine for a C55 Benz but an hour in the Benz erased the thought from my mind pretty quickly. It did have a great motor but what an overall cheaper feeling and just inferior car. While the platform used in the new Mustang (stolen from LS) is better than the old the car it's not on par with the M3. The Mustang is definitely more bang for your buck but I love the S54 engine of the M3 even more than the F20C from the S. They rev reliably to 8750 RPM's with the right mods (9250 with Delage set up) and the engine is just truly wonderful. I originally wanted a vert M3 but they're noticably slower than the coupe and a few hundred pounds heavier. It will still outhandle and probably outperform in every aspect the new Mustang GT vert. On the street probably a drivers race stock for stock but the M3 should be quicker and have zero trouble putting the power down. I've raced a few new GT coupes in my M3 and I don't notice them to be much quicker than the previous gen GT's. I pull easily from a dig and pretty hard past about 120mph.
