Default Whats a "good deal" on a 99-00 M coupe? Advice needed!

OK, so I am still in love with another car...one often known for its unique styling and awesome performance....the BMW M coupe. You either love the car, or you hate it...plain and simple. For those that are "in the know" for pricing for both the M coupe and the S2000, could you please give me a little advice?

My car:
2000 BLK/Red S2k with 48k miles. Perfect condition with OEM spoilers and a 100k bumper to bumper certified used Honda warranty

M coupe:
1999 BMW M coupe with 21k miles, all options from the factory, certified pre-owned BMW warranty (purchasing from a BMW dealer). Flawless condition.

A BMW dealership in Oregon is offering the M coupe to me for < $28,000. I have to make an offer that the service manager cannot refuse within the next couple of days before the dealership puts it up for auction or trades it off. I believe that the service manager really will get rid of it very soon, as they have had it on the lot for nearly 9 months now. I have been inquiring about the car for about 6 months now, and the price had come down from $31,XXX several months ago.

The dealership has offered me about $20,XXX for my trade-in. What would be a fair offering price on my part for the M coupe? What offer do you all think that I could get away with?

Please don't post to simply flame the M coupe. I love both cars, but think that I would like the M coupe more. I have driven several of them...

Pics are here for reference to the M. Actual color is Silver with Black leather interior:

If that's the S52-engined M Coupe (240hp, whereas the S54 makes 315hp), I say keep the S2000.

But if you still want the Beemer, PM S4_dukar - he has an '01 S54. I'm sure he can help you.

I traded my 99 M coupe in for a 02 M coupe recently. The dealer offered 20k for the 99. It had 25k miles and a 4k aftermarket suspension.

The S52 makes all it's power down low and will outrun an S2000 by 2-6 cars to 100. The S54 motor is very similar to the F20C, lots of pull all the way to redline and by nature of the different gearing much less torque (to the wheels) down low.

Personally I would consider waiting your dealer out -- and also taking a look around for private sellers willing to deal on an S54. Whereas the S52 is fun and quick, the S54 is fun and scary spinning the rears through second gear fast.

I usually don't disagree with you, Steve, but 2-6 car lengths is an awful lot...

Yeah it is quite a bit. Hmm. Maybe that's just at altitude. Perhaps the S2000 is affected more?

From other posts I read folks seem to think it's a drivers race. I should change my above statement to read -- "From my experience ..."

Either way stock for stock I think the S2000 is more fun to punt around -- this after spending the last two months driving the S2000 daily and realizing I am liking it more and more...

The M coupe has an amazing ability to toss you back in the seat right off the line. I have yet to drive an S54, but why try to test drive something that I cannot afford? If it were a straight across trade, I would just do it up...but its not. I cannot see spending an additional 7 or so grand more on top of my car to get something similar in performance unless there is a big advantage...here we have a BMW with less than half the mileage of my car, comparable warranty, gobs of low-end grunt, and traction control for having fun in the winter! I think that the difference, for me anyways, is only worth at most maybe $3k over my car. I would trade for an S54, but whats the point of doing that when I would have to pay like $16k over the price of my trade in???

Hey! You just complimented the S2000!

But yeah, I'd assume the high-revving S2000 would be at a disadvantage at high altitudes.

Which Dealership? I can go check it out, maybe make a comment that its way over priced and leave talking about a better deal somewhere else. Then you can come in an hour later and work on them as well. I can even act as though I have been offended by the high price Not sure if that will help at all at the BMW Dealership, but maybe..

Oh yeah, I get to drive it (with you in it of course). I will take the high road and not abuse it at the dealership on a test drive prior to you buying it.

So a little twist on the situation....

The dealer just called me back and said that he would give me $22,000 for my S2k, and have me make an offer for the M. I called American Honda, and they said if I cancel my warranty right now, I will get $1025 back, so that gives me 23,025 toward the M coupe...thats damn near retail of my car in Oregon! So, if I offer him $25k for the M coupe, this would be good and done with....should I do it?
