I have not heard a word about the RX8, and automobiles top 50 new '03's did not have a word about it.... although they did mention about a slightly fast EVOLUTION LANCER . "expect 0-60 in less than 6 seconds...."...

According to R&T (Sept) "sneak preview", RX8 is due Feb '03. Also says there will be a Japan-only Miata with 180-200 hp 1.8 I-4 (no date). Claims that next gen Miata, due 2004 or '05, will have a rotary option. But I'd bet the latter is getting into serious speculation range.
I'd check in with these guys for the latest news. (Kinda neat that the RX-8 has a site and it isnt even out yet.

I actually just got my RX8 CD rom
its the shape of a rotary engine. Anywho 250Hp's 4 Dr (turns out like the saturn 3 door) heard it won't be out till Early Spring '03 but then I heard something about Summer '03! :::shruggs shoulders::: I signed up for the RX8 news letter and they haven't given out too much info yet. I'm sure you can search the web though for it. (Can't wait till the Auto Show in Oct to take a look @ it though)

I agree with the sentiment that Mazda needs to release this car ASAP, like yesterday. Of course they don't want it to be buggy (could ruin the futures of rotary engines here in the US), but they are rapidly getting left behind in the fun, mid-priced sports segment.
personally I think this car is trying to be too many things to too many people and is going to end up pleasing very few.
It isn't a sports car, reall.
It isn't a sports sedan,really.
From reviews it seems a tad underpowerd and undersprung.
If you read on the rx8forum why people really like it, the reason are:
nice interior
nice look
adequate power
back seats
those don't sound like reasons to get passionate about a car.

Another good source for info is http://rotarynews.com/ the forum software isn't as user friendly, but there are some very knowledgeable people over there.
I guess I can understand why Mazda is waiting on the launch. First off, this is probably their one shot to revive the rotary in the US so they better get it right. Second, it's an issue of timing in the market. I don't think they want to go head-to-head with the new Z. The cars are aimed at different markets for the most part, but with similar pricepoints and comparable performance there is bound to be some cross-shopping. Also, the future of Mazda's financial well-being lies with the 6 not the RX-8. Presently Mazda has nothing to effectively compete with the Camcords, which is a much larger market. I do think they could do a better job of "leaking" information about the RX-8 in the mean time though. There was more buzz about the car four months ago than there is now.
Finally, as to whether it will appeal to many people I posted my impressions in another thread.

Not sure what they're thinking there. This factoid was in one of the recent car mags (C&D maybe?).
