Why is the S2K somewhat heavy?
S2000 is a bigger car than the miata
the Vette is made from fiberglass...
S2000 is a convertible, although you can remove the materials that make it a convertible, it was designed a convertible and would have been a few hundred pounds light and WAY WAY WAYYY better aerodynamics than the convertible it has been.
Woulda, coulda,shoulda... all that really matters is that the S2000 has been able to stand the test of time, 8 years, and still be placed in the same class as a Boxster S, Z4, 350z vert, MX-5, and still be able to be a good handling car or better

The S2000 is very stiff for a convertible, it has a very high torsional rigidity. Compare that to the torsional rigidity of some of the other convertibles in this list, and I think that could explain part of the weight...:

The Corvette comment wasn't specifically regarding the Z06.
Convertible or no, modern Corvettes don't weigh any more than they did in the 60s. New cars don't HAVE to be so much heavier.
Throw a 40 lb. roll bar in a Miata and you can do all the track days you want, as thousands of enthusiasts do. Just like you can with an S2k, though I only see about 2% as many S2k's as I do Miatae at the track...
The S2k is disappointingly overweight, it was my main gripe about the car when it came out (that and that I'd have preferred it as a coupe!) and is probably why I only just got one this past Feb instead of sooner.

the corvette z06 costs 70,000$ and has a titanium exhaust system.
we could ask honda to start replacing all of its component with lightweight cf/ti counterparts, and charge double the price. would you be happy then?
corvettes keeping their weight constant since the 60s prove only one thing: their cars were WAY overweight
the miata is a smaller, slower car, with a hand-operated soft-top.
its nice to wish and dream and all, but BE REALISTIC FOR A SECOND.
EVERYTHING in life is a practice of BALANCE and COMPROMISE. this sounds like another semi-daily thread where people wonder why the s2000 cant have a 3.0 liter 350hp that revs to 9000rpm and weight 2500lb but with a complaint ride and be quiet as a lexus with an exhaust tone like a ferrari..... and still cost 30,000$.
yo, isnt it obvious that some of those things are just FUNDAMENTALLY CONFLICTING?
An S2K overweight?! Haha! The weight is just about right for what I consider, a well built and high quality car.
If weight is such a concern, just get a Lotus Elise, theres hardly many RWD cars out there on the current market lighter than an S2K and new Miata.

For the 2nd time, I was talking about non-Z06 Corvettes.
