I had an '03 E class for two years. Horrible electronics.

I've never heard the Merc 4 described as anything but a buzzy piece of crap, so the V6 is advisable.

But I also agree with the others here: forget the Merc and get an IS or G35.

I drove an '04 230 Kompressor automatic. The motor was fairly smooth, I guess they ironed out the vibration in more recent versions. However, it was not fast at all. It was smooth and fairly quiet, but didn't have any balls to speak of, the TSX felt faster if that tells you anything. Ex g/f actually ended up getting a TSX after driving a 325i, C230, A4 1.8T, etc.
