z4 revised base model for 06'
Well, they increased the bore (84mm to 85mm) and shortened the stroke (89.6mm to 88) a bit, so that could account for some of the torque. (BTW, peak hp happens at higher revs of course.) Compression ratio went from 10.2 to 10.7 so I would have guess a torque increase from that but obviously not.
Slightly lower EPA mileage as well?
Jeez, this makes no sense. What the heck is BMW up to?

Then why would people pay for the better engine?
Customers who pony up the cash want the exlusivity. Going from 3.0i to 3.0si doesn't give them that at all. It makes perfect sense to badge them 2.5 from that perspective, doesn't it?
And, it is that exclusivity that drives most of the 3.0 sales; most buyers of the Z4 are not enthusiasts but snobs who want to one-up their friends.

Before this thread gets littered with stereotype comments, I'll just add one more thing to the OP's first post.
He forgot to mention that Honda hasn't really updated the S2000 other than water it down for the past 6 years.
At least with BMW you can choose an engine trim, lots of colors, etc. Oh and they made a whole different roadster from Z3 to Z4.
