2003 honda civic lx replacement key question
not sure if this is in the right section or not, but...
So I had to drive my buddy to the airport and his suitcase wouldn't fit in my s2k (go figure), so he let me use his car to take him. needless to say im a dummy and lost his key while he was away. Luckily he has a spare key, but I need to get him another key. I screwed up and being a good buddy I told him that I would pay for a new key for him.
So my question is, is there any way for me to do this without paying honda $150 for a new key. Can I buy a new blank transponder key for that car from somewhere else for less then honda is charging and just have it cut and programmed by honda?
I noticed that his key has the letter F stamped on it, while my s2k key has the letter V stamped on it. What does this mean? is it a code for the type of transponder that is in it? Is there a reputable place where I can buy OEM honda keys for less then the dealership?
Thanks fellas.

I believe that you should be able to buy another key and have it programmed. It was about 10 years ago when I had to deal with programming keys with my 2001 Civic when I did my K20 swap, but from what I seem to remember the immobilizer requires that the code in the key and the ECU have to match in order for everything to work. Meaning that you should be able to buy a chipped key and have it reprogrammed at Honda. When I did it they were kind enough to do it for me for free after hours.
The reservation that I still have is the way the key is cut. Obviously the differences in keys from one Honda to another isn't just the chip in the key. I don't know where you would get a key cut like that.
Long story short - I would probably just pay the $150.00. Avoid unnecessarily spending more money.
Gluck!
