Which is the better Boxster?

I'd want to drive both back-to-back for comparison.

I prefer the looks of the new one over the older one, it almost looks like they are deviating from that Volkswagen look which is a very good thing to me. Also, wheels can changed quite easily. I would probably swap those ridiculous wheels out with some lightweight 911 wheels if they fit. Lighter is very nice, seems nowadays everyone's going bigger and heavier. If money was no thing, I'd probably pick up the 981. If it is and your seriously looking Boxsters I'd get a used 987 or just wait a year or two and snatch a used 981. Buying a German car new is a terrible idea imo
I've heard that the new ones just cannot match the old ones in steering feel, but are superior in every other way. That makes it a tough call because people don't just buy Porsches for speed, they buy them for that "feel".
Ultimately I'm troubled by how far the Boxster is drifting from it's origins.

For those who say that the new Boxster is world's apart in terms of driving feel VS the 987.2S, can you care to elaborate as to how it is so much a better sports car?
Yes it looks different but I have yet to see how it performs that much better. (not talking about taking a few seconds off track times at the Ring, but something you can actually feel driving on normal roads)
My old 987.2S lacked a lot of steering feel compared to my 987S and they say the new one is even worse. Plus the 981 has exactly the same amount of horsepower-acceleration; I am sure the new Boxster grips more and has slightly better lap times but I just can't see how it's so much better.

Everything I've read from car reviews that compared the two back to back essentially broke the new car down as more isolated and quiet, or refined, while also being somehow more capable at handling. The biggest difference authors noted was sound isolation, much nicer interior, and less steering feedback. The wheelbase is stretched pretty far from the previous model, which results in a very different down the road feeling.
Boxster owners seem split - some buy new because, "new", and others buy old because, "old", but some don't feel the changes are that significant regardless their ultimate decision to buy a 981 or not. It seems evolutionary going from a 987 to a 981, so if you weren't familiar with either other one, I wonder if you'd really notice you were missing out on anything.

I've driven both recently. saki gt's comment was spot on. the new one feels more grown up, sophisticated, refined, less exciting despite the high performance numbers. you have to ask yourself, do you want it for fun or for more comfort/style? i personally would go with the older one. you can get a sweet used car price break and have loads of fun. new is just new these days. better is a different story. you have to figure out what you want first. that being said, the new boxster is a really great car, just not tens of thousands of bucks more.
the boxster is such a sweet car. i just wish it had the same gearbox as the s2k. it's not bad at all, but every box feels wonky compared to a short shifter s2k.
