If you want new, under $30k, Legacy GT 2.5 Limited if you want a great awd sedan, Pontiac G8 GT if you want a great sports sedan.
If you can buy used, a two-three year old Infiniti M45 fits the bill.
If you want better gas mileage than the above, but an appliance like a Camry or Accord and be glad you still have a fun car in the garage.

I have to second the ELEMENT only because I'm a previous owner and LOVE the ELEMENT. Although the side doors will get on your nerves if you use them regularly.
If you really want a "sedan," the VW Passat may be one for you to consider. I picked mine up in June and I am liking it more and more everyday...I've already put 10k miles on it and actually prefer to drive the Passat over my wife's V6 Accord Coupe. There are some considerable savings on the Passat right now and you can find some used at a great price as the '06s (like mine) are coming off lease for many folks...

Pontiac Vibe (Toyota reliability rebadged as a GM -- you should be able to get sick prices on it too) - try to score a 6spd. Remember it's basically a Toyota Matrix.
Else I'd go with:
Honda Element
Subaru Impreza WRX wagon/sedan 2.0 turbo AWD
Subaru Forester XT (sorry wagon only) 2.5L turbo AWD
Or FWD (ugh):
Honda Fit

I think the Element is going to be on the top of the list. With kids, and having a sports car as "the other car" I will need something than can carry big things. I don't want a large SUV, and a car can't take anything really large. Do you guys like the Element better than the FJ cruiser?

I bought an 09' TSX 6-sp, Tech, the other day, and have fallen in love with it. Reviews say the engine is anemic, but with the 6-sp, I think it's alot of fun. If you pay attention when accelerating, you can almost notice a VTEC point. The ELS stereo, navi, real-time weather/traffic updates, bluetooth, and quality execution are great. Albeit it's not the biggest looker, it's a great car - and I wouldn't think twice about making it a family hauler should I ever have one.

We tried Accord V-6, TSX, Altima, Corrolla, Lancer - - - all had some issue whether style or mechanical.
CR-V would be a great choice for the AWD/mini-SUV option.
