I would compare the M5 with an E or S class, not so much with the C class which is a less luxurious MB model.
The C is a lot prettier IMO, but the M5's a good ride, as long as you find one which doesn't go through a gallon of oil every few thousand miles...

I have been really looking now for an M5. But finding one that is not beat up is pretty hard. I found a few in WA but it looks as if I will have to go out of the state to get one. I would consider a E55 but they are still really expensive with high miles. The M5s I have found are all around $30-36,0000 with decent miles high 20-45,000.

You mentioned the Volvo. I would take a look at one. They are not in the same class as the other two but that also applies to price. My brother has an 850T-R. It doesn't have the power of the other two on your list but it's hardly underpowered and will do 0-60 in the mid 6s. It also has GREAT seats. Far better than the seats in any BMW I've been in. BMW seats aren't bad. The Volvo also has the virtue of not being flashy. That may not be your intent but it can be an advantage. Certainly I would expect insurance to be lower. Also, the stereo in bro's 850 is one of the best I've heard in any car. It was the first car stereo I ever heard that could reproduce strong but tight base and other fine details of music. It really is a great system. I suspect the newer Volvos are similar. Not as flashy or fast as the Germans but quite acceptable when you need to move 4 people in comfort. That said, I would only go Volvo based on a price advantage.
Also, what about a last gen 540 or even 530? The 530 was hardly slow and would be much cheaper than an M5.

other than that... the 2 cars are in 2 different classes... the M5 is probably superior in every way... bigger, roomier, faster, more luxurious and more expensive... the only way you can compare them is if the M5 is much older or has a LOT more miles... then it comes down to how much mileage your comfortable with... but at equal age, the M5 is clearly superior and will cost accordingly...
unless your "looking" for an automatic
