I knew a guy with a 420bhp 335i that would easily get 38mpg (calculated) on a motorway run.
More if you keep it legal.

So the diesel should manage it easily, in fact the owners on E90post will say so too

I am getting 34mpg out of my Z4 35iS on a motorway run being sensible though 24mpg is my current average over 3K miles. I expect if trying I could get higher than 34 on a motorway - but then I should be selling the car and getting a diesel again if I wanted to do that ! If I put my foot down the average mpg plummets to 20mpg ... and that is with 335bhp not 420bhp ... so I would hate to have his fuel bill when he uses his 420bhp

Thing is, you only need about 50bhp to do 80mph, so it doesn't really matter what the peak output is. (Based on the fact a C1 with 54bhp will do 96mph).

An S2000 with its high drag coefficient will do more than 35mpg at that sort of speed, so a much more modern 3-series rep-mobile designed for motorways is bound to be better than that, no matter what's been done to its tuning.

I went to look at a beautiful 123d yesterday, fully pimped out with all the extras, only thing that let it down for me was a non BMW stamp in the book at the last service. I've been reading up on the timing chain issues and it appears that 2007 to 2009 are the worst affected, as in the timing chain can snap causing lots of damage/bills, post 2009 the chain dosen't snap but the tensioners still may need attention. BMW have been making good will gestures to helping out with some of the cost if the worst does happen, but only with a full BMW servive history. Just keeping my eye out for a 2010 123d with all the toys now, I'll keep you posted.

Picking up on the anal bit, is this desire to show high mpg figures by driving a performance car like a pussy, some new kind of perversion?

If I understand correctly, you have a quick car that you drive everywhere at 56-65mph and never boot it. Why would you do that, what is the point?

I managed to get my 400bhp Jag showing 2mpg the other day. THAT'S the point!!!

Precisely

You can free roll downhill at 200mpg in anything. Has to be a long hill though!

True petrolheads don't last long in remapped diesels. They are a bit pathetic in throttle response. They are just rapid cruisers, nothing more - so much so - anyone can drive one. They require zero skill. Lots of skill to avoid accidents, and radar guns. Great at pushing in during traffic jams or queue jumping.
The deluded turn up the power, make it undriveable on the limit, then complain of broken tranny's, brake wear, turbo failure, clutch failure, pretend they aren't bothered because generally it's Audi man at the helm!
