My brother does 50 miles each way on his commute - he uses a diesel Focus (I think it's an 02 model) and it has been bulletproof, is nice to drive (I've driven it a few times) and cheap to run.

I used to have a 1.4 106 Diesel and it was *very* cheap to run.

HOWEVER

It wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, 80mph was a struggle and any kind of incline would require some major cog-swapping!

I have one sat on the drive.

I only use it for dumping in town when I go for a few beers, taxi back then pick up the next morning!

Otherwise clock up 120 miles a day commuting in the Beemer. Average about 24mpg but I do enjoy driving it.

I thought about that, as I do 45 miles per day.

Not sure what though process led me to get an EVO

I find when adding it up, its not worth it for a few hundred quid saving a year. Its a v easy one to caclulate as you have all the figures you need!

Now I'm doing motorway miles (220 per day), my Primera is getting < 33mpg. Makes me wonder if I should have got a diesel, but I don't think I could handle the boredem. Keep your Mazda.

When you add tyres & service costs it's a bit more than a few hundred quid!

Only had my M3 six months & so far I racked up over 20K miles,

That equates to two sets of tyres
