My Primera is ace. Really. I keep arriving at work with a bit of an adreniline buzz after doing 100mph+ along the twists of the A3 in the wet. Best car I've ever bought (when you factor in that it cost 1/12th the price of the S).

I'd quite like to see what it could do on a certain German toll road.

Looking forward to seeing you take it round the Ring!

Sadly most of my commute is the M40 and M25. And the A3 is mostly dual carrigeway. On a good day 110 miles take an hour and a half.

BTW, my Primera GT has:
Double wishbone suspension (on the front)
Chain driven camshafts
2.0 16v engine with bugger all torque.

Any of this sounding familiar?

My recommendation would be a 306 D-Turbo. Torquey, quite rapid, cheap to run and relatively refined for a cheap car. Be aware that build quality is not up there with VW, though...
That's what I've run as a beater for the last 4 years.

Very reliable and cheap to run. Just make sure that you buy a 97+ model as the 96s need servicing every 6000 miles. I think the ones after that are on at least 12, maybe 18k service intervals.

We've got a 1.5 323 which must do about 38mpg. Fecking boring to drive though

I'm determined to get something more interesting (and automatic) next year.

32 mpg!
bloody luxury
I get exactly 20.6 out of the current beater (although you can't knock it for comfort and has a reasonable amount of get up and go)

Yeah 32mpg would be fine for less miles, but 80 per day means it wont even go 1 week without filling up! That can be quite irritating after fighting through traffic for an hour.
