CRV - I am on my second and they are bulletproof.

Ironically, so was my wife's MY04 freelander, K series and all.

This is what I'm driving at the moment and I really like it

Huge boot too

I would probably say the best 3.5 K I've ever spent

Rented one of these in Canada a couple of years ago & was astonished how such a large car externally could contrive to be so small inside (like an inverse tardis!) We found the luggage storage space, and particularly the space for rear seat passengers, disappointingly limited.

We have the same issue, 2 big dogs, so need a vehicle with a decent boot and big enough to fit all our gear in as well.

Already gone down the estate car route, then a MPV - Citroen Picasso and have recently purchased a Nissan X-Trail DCI. Had a good look at the CRV, but we both preferred the X-trail as the top spec one has lots of nice toys, has a good boot, was a better drive and better looking than the new CRV.

Very pleased with it 4k in and is doing 33-35 mpg on average

Given the requirements, for value, I would probably go for a Skoda Octavia Estate, if 4WD is a must there is a version so equipped. Not a sparkling drive (although the vRS I drove was OK) but a wide range of engines/specs.

Widely used by cabbies so will be pretty reliable and cheap to run...

Failing that a Mondeo or Vectra Estate would be a good bet.

I'd forget the Freelander - I have a couple of friends who had one of these each and they both seemed to spend more time in the garage than absolutely necessary...

Mondeo estate.
Cheap, reliable, good chassis - OK to drive.
And easy to sell too
