These shows arent really about cars; they're family entertainment.
I'd like to see a proper European language car review/preview programme such as Best Motoring produce but it certainly wouldnt get an 8pm slot on any of your major TV channels cos the missus and kids would'nt watch it. and neither would your average punter most likley.

errr - then why watch it?
Turned it on for five minutes last night, probably less actually, then realised my mistake and switched over to Dave to watch a Top Gear re-run.
Whoever the producers are for that rubbish waste of time need to go for a short walk!

Their subjects can be quite good but the execution of them is just rubbish. They are stuck between entertainment and a consumer show, plus it's all done on such a small budget.
Last nights bit on car polish, could have gone either way would have been good to see a factual does it work item. the funny one on car polish has already been done on top gear with the Rolls Royce in the swiming pool. it just failed to be funny, entertaining or factual.
Another rant being their shoot outs. When they have two different drivers and they get less than .1s difference they can't claim one is faster. why don't they make them do the test several times each or tell you about the method or put the full detail up on the web site.

Take T3 10 years ago when they reviewd stuf they gave the size / weight / what its made out of, warrenty etc now its just ' buy it its cool '
oh and even top gear has changed on so many levels ! watch something like this from 1989... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WC-8x7HlE9M

Spot on Tom,
I just watched your link above as well as this old gem from 1991 with a very young and spiffing Tiff Needel giving the then new Civic a run through.

Far more detailed, less glamourour and more factual; but you can see straight away that you've cut the audience massively; and that's unfortunately what it's all about for producers and broadcasters of mainstream TV slottery

I only watch Top Gear for entertainment purposes, so therein lies the reason I don't watch 5th Gear.
If I want a review of a car I'll come to the internet for it.
