Default 6 points for speeding

That is what they are now trying to do you for breaking the speed limit.

This country is so harsh on *safe* drivers, why don't they stricken up on pleb drivers, middle lane hoggers, incompetent bar stewards & people who use left hand lanes on islands to turn right?

My view:

There are people in there prime driving time aged 25 - 45 where reactions speeds, experience and common sense are all at a good level, there are people who almost live on the road, reps. lorry drivers, taxi's etc, these people are always one or maybe several steps ahead, thinking about what may happen and would they be able to stop / control if such happened, most of these drivers IMO are safe, they indicate, do not hog lanes, ok they may travel at 85mph on the motorway but IMO ARE NOT THE CAUSE OF MOST ACCIDENTS.

Then we have the typical Micra, Matiz type drivers, at the time of driving they are thinking about last nights soap or what they are doing later, they tootle along at 40mph in a 60mph country road say to themselves 'I am driving safely' but then these numb skulls maintain their speed of 40 when the road becomes 30 through a village!!??!
They take the left hand lane and go all the way round the outside of a roundabout usually without indicating, they stay in the middle lane of m.ways because of the old 60's view, lorries in lane 1, cars in lane 2 and faster cars in lane 3... These drivers IMO ARE THE CAUSE OF MANY ACCIDENTS.

SO... I think keep the points score the way it is BUT introduce something new, we all know about advanced driving tests, how about making the advanced test compulsory at 21 or 25 and when you pass you get 18 points as apposed to 12. People who fail the test get banned from motorways; seriously, if you can not pass your advanced it is in EVERYONES interest for you not to be allowed to use the m.way.
Maybe even do like a rally stage licence, stage 1 you can drive upto 1400cc, 2 upto 1800cc, 3 upto 2.5 and so on or give cars with power a special licence.
It scares me to think if a young lad has the money he could go and buy a monster of a car and give it hammer with minimal road experience.

I think just slamming us with extra points is not the way forward and certainly WILL NOT resolve the accident problem, the people who are causing the most accidents are not speeding.

Do you see where I am coming from?

With the proposals it'll make the roads slightly quieter and earn extra money for the coffers. Common sense has sadly never been the issue.

Tempted to sell the car, cutup the licence and then drive uninsured, untaxed, non MOTed cars.

If you get caught you get a slap on the wrist and a ban. Like I care, I'd not have a licence.

Polish plates would solve speed cameras too.

I'm combining it with :

jacking in the job,
impregnating a few local 16 year old scrubbers,
getting a crack habit and
petty crime.

Swimming with dolphins, here I come.

This country is a little f@c#ed up to say the least... what you are saying there is somewhat true

If you are chav scum they look after you.. if you work your nuts off and try and keep 99% within the law you are walked over and robbed.

It sucks!

Where is my shell suit...

You've missed the point. The 6 points proposal is for people exceeding the speed limit by a significant amount. 45 or over in a 30 or over 94 in a 70 for example. I see nothing wrong with that as those sorts of speeds over the limit are deliberate.

There was a proposal for 2 point penalties for small amounts over the limit which has sadly been canned.

All the specialist training in the world is great, but driving safely is more about attitude than anything else. When I was 18 I drive like a loony, my Astra 1.2 was driven far faster for more of the time than my S2000 is. I thought I had amazing reactions and could get out of any situation. Luckily I did not have an accident, but the truth is (as Lloyd says) that most accidents involve young drivers who overestimate their abilities and cannot read the road very well.

Motorways are very safe roads and although I'd personally like to see snipers for middle lane hoggers, they are not really dangerous per se.

Road safety is all about driver attitude more than anything else. On one hand you have people who concentrate properly who observe, anticipate and so on (like me in fact )

On the other you have people who, whilst in the car have several other priorities, talking to a passenger, or someone on the phone (even hands free) listening to the radio and so on.

You also have the fearful drivers, who sit in the middle lane because they feel safe, who stop at roundabouts even when there is nothing coming and so on. These people don't have accidents that often.

You also have aggressive types, tailgating, making rash, pointless overtakes, who try to barge other drivers out of their way, even on busy roads, cutting people up and so on.

Essentially, we each can choose how we drive, we can choose to speed or not, we can choose to be courteous or aggressive, we can choose to make driving our priority or not.

One causes the other. I have to admit to turning into the latter when I get held up by somebody, say, pulling into the right hand lane of a dual carrigway at 70mph half a mile before the lorry they think they're overtaking.
