Those Evo boys rant about it with such tenacity that you could be forgiven for thinking that any 911 is like a four wheeled equivalent of Jesus, bringing health and life to all the little children sleeping in the houses it passes.

Of course, some think that it's just a squashed beetle wearing the 'pride' of an engineering mistake that the Germans fail to own up to!

There's no denying that their efforts have worked, on road and track, but my god it had better be bloody good!
That's a good analogy; all done with smoke & mirrors & an awful lot of hype!

Ask anyone who owns a GT3 and they'll tell you how good it is. They'll also tell you all the practicality downsides and the PIA on roads factors.

Even with the cooking 911, no-one really mentions that it only really comes alive if you really thrash it & it feels a little ordinary under everyday conditions. Or, (rather ironically, considering how awful the original was) it's one of the few German cars with truly excellent ergonomics.

I've driven a 986 boxster s, 2nd gen Cayman s, 993 cabrio with tiptronic which ironically this phone wants to autocorrect to histrionic, and a 996 gt3 rs.

They vary from the sublime (rs) to the ridiculous ie the histrionic pram.

There is definitely too much hyperbole, but some are very worthy cars indeed.

the 987 boxster s and Cayman s are on my (long) shortlist for my next car. And if I lived closer to the 'ring I'd have a 996 gt3.

Indeed; just because they're overrated doesn't mean they're not very good cars!

GT3 - brilliant car but not what Evo make it out to be.

It is compromised by front understeer though, or rather the engine position. If they put that race inspired 3.6 in the middle, it would be sublime. Fan boys will say 'you have to drive around it' which you can, but that's not a logical argument. As I say, still brilliant but not levels which leave you messing your pants at how well it drives.

Road noise isn't an argument, as it's not a car you buy for road cruising. It's an issue for me as my driving needs have changed, thus the noise issue has become a reason to not want it.

So I take the point about Evo / other journalists veiws on the Boxster, but i've no doubt it's a great car too. Just maybe not as great.

Would anyone buy a car on what a magazine says? I hope not. But you would take note of the comments.

MB - I was really looking forward to your thoughts, since you're an ex porker owner and I know you'd have driven the wheels off it!

I do respect the 911, and spend a weekend at the ring and it'll only cement the 'how good must that be' feeling.

I just can't help but think Evo are being a little narrow minded on the best in segment accolade they bestow on every model.

Hasn't that always been the case with Evo?

I've never really enjoyed what I've read of it.

Stunning looking machine, I reckon I'll have one after my Z4M and I will get the 20" wheels.

Saw one of these in the flesh the other day in a green metail, did look rather nice and the wheels suited it.
Look forward to seeing the updated Cayman next year along the same lines
