What's with the twatty buttons that give you more power?

Who are these things for?

Why have a 'Sport' button in a purely performance focused car like a GT3, seems totally illogical to me

I kind of get the ones that stiffen the suspension, remove / decrease traction control settings.

But, if you buy an the hardcore model it should be hardcore as standard?

The sport button sounds like Germanic control:

'Ve vill der extrapoweren fur zehn zegonds vergift'

'so de crazy englanders ne brocken engine macken'

Where ?

I hope you are not contemplating buying one of these
Looking at different options at the mo Jamie.

I know a CSL or my Exige is a way off a GT3 but they almost do the same job for a fraction (1/3) of the price. And that I can't get over

Good review btw, sums it up nicely.

An Imprevo might do 90% of what a Ferrari can do - maybe 110%?

Misses the point by a mile

As for which one of these is better, only personal preference based on need/use/driving style can decide that

if its the sport button thats in all porshes with sport chrono then it activates the pasm and alters the throttle mapping. Its actually not twatty at all its a very useful button (if it is what I say it is) as it allows you to be comfortable at one minute then have a very firm ride with throttle thats very sensitive making heel and toeing easier. As i say not sure if the GT3 has something additional but it is defo this with cars that have pasm and sports chrono.

Different example Pete, and also depends what you're buying it for.

I quite agree that an Evo could perform as well or better as some Ferrari's, but a Ferrari isn't all about the performance, which is your point.

In the case of the GT3, it's not meant to be pretty, it's a road going track weapon - no frills, not a tourer like most Fezza's - and given that is all about performance, I think it can be compared to things like the ones I used as examples.

I would be buying one for it's ability on track, as it's intended. I drive maybe 2-4k miles per year. So to me, if all that matters is getting from A to B very quickly with a bit of comfort, then a CSL could maybe do the trick! It sounds great too.

The 997 turbo is a slightly different ball game.

the 996 GT3 didn't have bad road manners, it was the RS that had awful road manners. The 997 GT3 RS supposedly rides better than the 996 GT3.

And after seeing the stats it's a complete no-brainer even more so.

And like people have mentioned, the standard GT3 in Clubsport format (both 996 and 997) have a 1/2 roll cage.

If you're mostly on the road I still think the M3 is better value than the CSL and the Turbo is a better option than the GT3.

It having the M3 that has really made me understand about road vs track.

To misquote someone

S2000: 2/3 road, 1/3 track,
Elise: 1/3 road, 2/3 track
M3: 3/4 road, 1/4 track
CSL 1/4 road, 3/4 track (those seats are really unforgiving)

I suspected there may be more to it than is suggested in the review above.

It makes it sound like you press a button and something gets unlimited rather than it changing what's already there if you see what I mean.

The former would be twatty, the latter is more akin to something like sport mode on an auto box and makes more sense to me

On topic, Turbo or GT3, I think you put it very nicely in mngt c'n'tancy speak

I think Jamie and Moff earlier put their fingers on it in simple terms
i.e. daily driver versus weekend track or road sunny day drive

The basic GT3 spec has aircon, hifi and sliding roof options!

So they even differentiate the RS for the track version

(Whereas the Turbo is a daily drive machine)

Leaning towards the GT3 now ...

Seems to be less GT3's around than turbos, and a bit more pricey.

20k less for a GT3 new, so they must be holding value rather well!

Some of the 996 prices are a bit puzzling. Seen a few at 60k ish!
