I bought the Tom Tom 710, with the full European maps already loaded, it is cheaper to do this than add maps later.
When I first had it (approx 3 months ago) it lead me into the middle of a field, 20 miles from where I was heading, it then locked up and refused to work untill I found the RESET button.
After resetting and connecting to the web for a new software upgrade it has been perfect and very reliable and takes seconds to recalculate an alternative route.
If you set for a town with no street listed it takes you to the recognised town centre, ie church, council offices etc.

Not that I ever would..
Just got hold of TT6 for my PDA. Apart from some gradiated backgrounds to the screens and a faster load time it seems they've subscribed to the mantra "If it ain't broke..."
More than a few folk on here have direct experience of my navigational abilities. Hopefully this will enable me to get to Ardrossan from Edinburgh on Friday without going via Ipswich.
Oh gutted...the Nederlands voices don't say "Scchtttoooppp!!"
