Most places will re-gas with a dye so that they can spot any leaks. Unless there's an obvious problem, that's what they'll do before trying anything else.

My beater needed a new condenser last year; only

Checking & repairing AC car systems is a specialist's job (equipment & knowledge). A honda dealer or an independent will probably just play middleman and you'll pay for the privilege.
So do find one in your area.

When I bought my car the air con did not work at all, just blew out warm air. I borrowed a pressure gauge and aircon gas canister off a mate (bought from halfords). topped it up to the required pressure and its as good as any new car I've ever had. Just thought I'd mention it

WTF?

It's just like filling a lighter, surely?

Only without all those adaptors, none of which fit so you get covered in LPG.

Well Nick the adapter although rather expensive is more or less universal for car AC but it isn't a simple matter of filling it up..
The need for a vacuum pump fe springs to mind. Then oc the right amount of gas has to be taken into account (special scales)...and so it goes on..
And all this under the assumption that there's no leak (hard to find sometimes) and that a lack of gas is the culprit . Could be the compressor too fe...
In short stay clear

When they regassed my old beaters AC the guy explained what it actually does.
IIRC it removes all the coolant cleans it and refills the system with the correct amount, topping up where necesarry.
