Default Is alignment the new garage scam?

Three lots of tyres (ie full sets) fitted to different cars recently - one cookingr car, two not

Every garage tried to sell 'full alignment' at the same time

Which makes a change from 'you need new pads/discs'

Anyone else spotted the trend?

I suppose it was only a matter of time

I suppose it's the new 'in thing' and they're just cashing in on it.

I thought it was still quite unusual for cars to be fully adjustable anyway, perhaps I'm out of touch?

then I'm equally out of touch

but I doubt the average punter would have a clue

hence my question about it being a scam

Your average cooking car will only be adjustable for toe.

Even Type-Rs (R is for racing don't you know...) are only adjustable for toe as standard.

Only 'proper' cars are fully adjustable for Toe/Camber/Caster.

TBH, everytime your tyres are changed, you should be looking at a geo.

However on basic cars, this shouldn't be more than

So basically they're doing tracking but dressing it up as something else.

Naughty.

Most moderns with real rear suspension are camber/toe-adjustable these days.

It seems they wanna charge, but they don't have the patience to do it correctly.

That's one of my main concerns about it.

I had the rears changed on the Accord recently to be given the line as Pete points out of my alignment being out. Even brought me in to the garage and showed me a few lines projected by laser!

They've been doing this for a couple of years now.

Rightly or wrongly, I don't have that much faith in their ability, so I'd probably go to an alignment specialist if I wanted it looked at.

Quite an odd but good point if that makes sense.

As Graham says if you change the tyres on a sporty car you should have the geometry done, although I've driven a few dealer spec cars recently where the Geo was way out.

My take would be to have the tyres changed at a budget place then get the geo fixed by a specialist
