Default Annual MoT test

Report from The Herald says that the govenment is looking at scrapping the annual MOT tests in order to save money and bring it in line with the rest of Europe.

The Test would be replaced with a new test every 2 years on vehicles older than 4 years.

Not a good idea. there are far too many people who can't keep a car roadworthy for 12 months. never mind 24 months.

Personally I think they should bring in 6 monthly tests for cars over 10 years never mind extending it to 24 months.

As for allowing cars up to 4 years before an MOT that will help the economy, good one, not.

Silly idea IMHO - there is enough of a problem with unroadworthy vehicles on the road as it is. I assume they have taken into account:

a The extra Police and vehicle inspectorate time for dealing with unroadworthy vehicles
b The additional costs to the NHS and emergency services from more accidents
c The additional benefit they will have to pay to out of work testers & garage mechanics
d The increase in insurane premiums for older cars that will inevitably result

Doubt it

I think this may be a reason why they are doing it.

There used to be quite a few MOT testers in my area but now there is only the one. This was a direct result of the new regulations that were brought in this year and the MOT test stations deciding that it wasn't worth the hassle for the small amount of money they made from the test. This included a council run MOT centre.

It is now a real PITA for me to get an MOT.

I certainly think the extending the first test to 4 years is a good idea. Maybe even 5 years. But extending the time between for after that. Not so good.
