I was thinking about this track day too, but then had a look on the BaT list of attendees: there is some fast machinery there! I'd be spending most of my time getting out of everyone else's way. So, decided against it. I think it is a circuit I would like to try one day though: maybe it will be cheaper next year!?

I wouldn't worry about the list too much Simon.

I've often found some of the fast machinery isn't so fast, and some of the cheaper machinery is very fast!

There is an S2000 attending already I see.

I am still tempted to do it, mainly as I haven't used the car for ages and I have bugger all else to do tomorrow!

The fast stuff is generally fast at Silverstone, regardless of driver.

It's not difficult enough to demote the poorer drivers with fast cars from the better drivers with slower cars out like most circuits do.

It's quite dull. Too wide, straights are too long and it becomes a track day of who has the fastest car.

A couple of good places, for example just before the brooklands stand, coming in flat out under the bridge, sweeping right flat out, drifting over to the left, then getting over to the right, for the next left hander, before slowing down for the hairpins.

apart from that I wont be going again.

I dunno - I thought Maggots/Beckets is quite good fun, and Bridge round to Luffield isn't bad.

It is too flat, and too wide for a road car. The corners go on forever, and people with a million horsepower will overtake you on the straights and then hold you up in the corners.

But it's a trackday and you're probably going to enjoy it regardless.

I dunno. The GP circuit is too big, granted, but the club circuit is better. Still an issue though, as to get the top speed on the straights, you need a final drive ration so high that your accelleration is then pap in the slower corners.

That said, I have seen race prepped M3s undertaken by (proper) Mini Coopers and clubman racers powered by reliant robin engines. The point made above about getting held up in the corners is where you need the skill and the balls to overtake up the inside/outside/middle/wherever. This makes for great racing, but is pants for a trackday, as overtaking on the interesting bits is rightly verboten - no knowing what that stockbroker in the porker might be about to do...

Formula 750?

Thought they used Fiat engines these days, or are there still some Reliant powered cars going?

Most of the F750 cars are superbly built though, unlike the M3 which can only ever be a rep-mobile with expensive trick-bits added

Wait till Jo gets back - she was racing on the National circuit there a few weeks ago. Most people at the time were saying it wasn't great but I haven't driven it myself so I can't comment directly.
